Background
Honour Among Thieves is the first full length film by Rodriguez Jennings, a friend of mine that I met in college in a screen writing class. I had done work for Chris Jakab’s short film Jeff of the Hospital, and we were all mutual friends of one another, having met in the same class I mentioned before. I think Rod asked a few different people for music for this project, and he had asked me just for the three tracks that ended up making it into the film.
Unlike Jeff of the Hospital, Rod was able to send me some test footage of the takes to be used in the film, which meant I could compose to picture, which was, and still is, pretty new to me. I was still working in Pro Tools at the time, and it has a video window you can use to playback video from a file and the timeline matches the one in your session. So, if you need a sting or certain sound to happen in time with the video, you’re able to easily produce it that way.
Much like all of the commission pieces I’ve done, these songs were all produced in-house. The drums were recorded in my home studio, and I had initially done some admittedly goofy vocals for the track “Thieving in the D”, which ended up getting cut from the final version. Trust me, it was for the best. The film follows the trials of an ex-con trying to lead an honest life, but then she gets dragged back into her thieving ways from an old accomplice. The entirety of the film was shot on location in Detroit, if I recall, and it’s available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, so go check it out!
